World Championship Darts

In the world of darts, the months of December and January mean one thing, the PDC World Championships. Running since 1994 (following the split from the British Darts Organisation – BDO) the event, as is so often the case, has been dominated by one man; Phil “The Power” Taylor. Taylor is one of only 6 players to have won the tournament, but is way out in front with his record of 14 wins.

When the event returns to Ally Pally in December, The Power won’t however be returning as reigning champion, having being knocked out in the second round of last year’s competition by Michael Smith. 2014’s crown was taken by Michael van Gerwen, the Dutchman’s first World Championship success. All eyes will be on Taylor for the upcoming event, however, to see if he can regain the dominance he held over this event for so long. He was present in 16 of the first 17 finals, but has only reached that stage once in the last 4, when he took the title in 2013.

Alexandra Palace has been the host of the World Championships since 2008, with the event held at the Circus Tavern, Purfleet for 14 years previously. Since the split from BDO in 1994, the merits of the players in the PDC competition has often been debated, however one thing that isn’t up for debate is the excitement enjoyed over the two and a half weeks of play. Last year’s competition saw 603 180’s, beating the previous record of 588 set in 2012, in addition to the four 9 dart finishes in the last 5 years. Darts enthusiasts will spend their Christmas break glued to their screens, but there’s nothing quite like enjoying the thrilling atmosphere of being there at the world’s number 1 darts competition. It’s a huge event for players and fans alike, with Thomas Cook Sport giving you the chance to be there with our exclusive range of darts packages.
