Visit Sri Lanka
The historic city of Galle is a Unesco World Heritage Site and was the island’s main port, coming to particular prominence during the Dutch colonial period. Much of its architecture still reflects this time, as well as the earlier fortifications of the Portuguese. Ancient churches, mosques and the Galle fort are imposing destinations but casual walkers will draw pleasure from exploring its rambling lanes on foot.
This beautiful city nestles in Sri Lanka’s mountainous interior, alongside the picturesque Kandy Lake. Despite its tropical climate, Kandy is kept cooler by breezes and its higher elevation, making it a perfectly temperate tourist destination. Often referred to as a city that ‘looks good even when it’s raining’, there’s plenty to see, including the sacred Buddhist relic ‘Temple of the Tooth’.
The first and final city you’ll encounter, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital is a vibrant metropolis and has been a busy port for centuries. Its architecture, food and character reflects modern Sri Lankan culture and its pre-independence ownership by the British, Dutch and Portuguese. The palm tree-lined Galle Face Green and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque are just two of the city’s many popular and eye-catching tourist destinations.
