World Grand Prix Darts

Dublin in October. It’s what the darts world looks forward to, when the PDC World Grand Prix comes to town. Held over a week in the autumn, it’s one of the last events in the calendar and often one of the most unpredictable.

As you’d expect, Phil “The Power” Taylor has dominated this tournament over the years with 11 title wins, the most recent coming in 2013. However, he has had increased competition in recent years, including that from the 2014 champion Michael van Gerwen, who edged past James Wade to take his second title. Taylor is widely regarding as the best darts player of all time, and he’s certainly enjoyed his time in Dublin, with only four other players in history taking the title here. They are Alan Warriner (2001), Colin Lloyd (2004), James Wade (2007 & 2010) and Michael van Gerwen (2012 & 2014). You can bet Taylor will be gunning for title number 12 when the 2015 tournament kicks off on 4th October. It might not be that easy for the former champion however. Despite holding the record number of wins, Taylor’s time here shows the unpredictability of the event. Until 2010, when he lost in the semi-final, “The Power” had either won the tournament or lost in the first round

The unpredictability is due the tournament’s double in, double out format which means players must start and end the leg with a double or centre bull. It’s also a shorter format, with best of 3 legs in the all important first round – something with has troubled even the most talented of champions. The Citywest Hotel in Dublin has been the World Grand Prix home since 2001, originally being held at The Casino Rooms in Rochester as a replacement for the World Pairs tournament, before moving to the Crosbie Cedars Hotel in Rosslare, County Wexford.
